Let’s Talk About Email: Patrick Spielmann

If the question is “want to talk about email?,” Patrick’s answer is a resounding “yes.”

Patrick Spielmann is the founder of Uptics, a sales automation software company. With email being such a cornerstone of automation today, Patrick is no stranger to an inbox. It was great to read his honest and humorous answers. He says he’s got at least four email addresses, but something tells us a lot of you can relate!

The best email you received today: 

This might be cheating, but I get an email every time someone signs up for Uptics. 😉 That aside, the best email I received today was actually a cold email! It had the perfect amount of personalization, credibility, proof, and they nailed the subject line.

The most intriguing subject line you’ve ever seen: 

This is a tough one… I don’t think I have one that sticks out, but the ones that get me to open typically have some mystery about them or a simple way of portraying an opportunity to help my business. For instance, the subject line from the cold email I received of “Partnership Opportunity.” It was very simple but resonated with me because I’m always exploring new partnerships, so it’s very relevant to me.

Your biggest email pet peeve: 

Not including a way to easily unsubscribe from automated emails. Generally, I mark these as SPAM. 

How often do you check your email?

Too much. I think somewhere in Google’s server farms there is a dedicated server for me.

The word or phrase you most use in your emails: 

“I hope you’re doing well.” I usually open my emails with some sort of pleasantry.

The best thing about sending a newsletter:

Staying in contact with your audience with updates, adding value, and staying top of mind. 

If you could email any famous person, who would it be – and why?

Elon Musk. I just find him really inspiring and if his emails are anything like his tweaks, I’m sure they will be 🔥.

Who is the person you don’t email enough?

Great question. I probably don’t email enough partnership opportunities with other software providers. Typically, I connect with them on social, but I could definitely up my game here.

The newsletters you look forward to the most:

I’ve been into reading the Unbounce newsletters and emails recently. They put out some good content and helpful tips.

An email you wish you’d never sent: 

I try not to live life with regrets, so I’ll just say the one where I had a typo, lol. (Usually, 50% of them… and that’s with Grammarly).

An email you’d be happy to get: 

Good news. I always love getting good news. And not “the news,” but good news about a new feature working in our product, and great use case from a user, or how we’ve helped someone with their sales process, automation, and growing their business.

To inbox zero or to not inbox zero?

I wish I could keep my inbox at zero. Unfortunately, I have like four of them. I definitely need some help here.

No. 1 reason why you unsubscribe: 

Not relevant or get too many communications.

Biggest no-no in an email campaign: 

Not including a way to easily unsubscribe from automated emails. People think it’s sneaky to make you type in your email address or make you reply to them with some ridiculous response, but I just mark them as SPAM. 

The best way to grow your email list:

Methodically. Put out really good content, and offer incredible lead magnets that add value to your audience and give them a quick “win” with their first experience with you. 

One thing that should change about email:

It’s really hard for small and medium businesses to do cold email right because of all the complexities and risks of SPAM. So one of my goals is making this much, much easier for businesses with our software.

A brand email you always open:

Zapier. They always have something new and exciting to explore.

What do you most love about email?

The ability to get creative with personalization and at the same time being able to leverage automation at the same time.
